Newsroom Special - Cancer Research UK 'Walk All Over Cancer'

5 minutes | Tuesday, 27 February 2018

Despite the government recommending that people should participate in at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week it seems that UK commuters are walking less than 15 minutes a day as part of their daily commute which could result in millions of us not reaching our weekly quota of exercise; poor weather (37%) and lack of time (24%) are the top reasons as to why we’re not.

The majority (80%) of UK commuters sit down for most of their commute, travelling by car (59%), bus (19%) or train (12%). This sedentary commuting habit has led to around a third (33%) of UK commuters admit to walking for just five minutes or less as part of their journey to and from work each day.

The new research commissioned by Cancer Research UK has been released as the charity calls on people across the country to step up and take part in ‘Walk All Over Cancer’ this March, to help raise crucial funds towards beating cancer sooner.

Joining us in studio to talk to us about how being more active can have many health benefits, including reducing cancer risk is walking expert Joanna Hall and Steve, who took part in last year's Walk All Over Cancer campaign.
